The last few weeks have flown by so quickly in anticipation of going to see my parents in Ohio. We received word that we would be driving the distance due to Maethaâs plane being booked already. A small group of Bearers needed to go to Portland to scout location headquarters for the blast. This seems strange to me that Iâm not a part of the process. So, here I am, riding in the back of a minivan, driving across the country, to my parentâs home.
Itâs nearly midnight and my sleepy little hometown streets are quiet, even for being two days before Christmas. The multicolored lights adorning some homes and trees are obscured by a light layer of snow creating a magical picture like what I might see on a postcard.
A sense of emptiness fills my stomach as I consider I donât really have a set place in this world to call my own. Chris has his own apartment in Washington D.C.âan apartment that stands unoccupied because of him being held at the Bureauâbut I havenât had anything to call my own since college. My own homebase. Our wedding, or coupling, is fast approaching, and I imagine weâll find an apartment or home or some sort of permanent location in Portland due to the fact the aftermath cleanup will take a long time. I think we will, anyway. We will be very busy taking care of anyone affected by the blast. Weâll help by healing sickness, teaching those who develop powers how to respect natureâs will, and by keeping the Reapers away from the Elemental powers if possible. Iâm moderately tempted to look to the future to see, but I choose not to as I understand the ramifications of accidentally changing important details of my life.
Brand tosses a small bag of candy into my lap, startling me back to the present.
âUh, thanks?â I want to toss it right back at him.
âHey, look where we are.â I follow the direction his finger is pointing and see that weâve arrived at his house. A lone evergreen wreath with white lights and a big red bow hangs on the front door. âYou keep your phone on your side at all times, Calli,â he orders.
âI will.â
Ruth says, âThere isnât anything in the near future to worry about, Brand.â
âNot for her, maybe. But for me, weâll see.â
I canât tell if heâs joking or worried. I suspect heâll visit Suz while heâs in town, but I donât want to ask. Duncan helps Brand get his bag from the back of the van.
âYou guys donât have to wait around. Iâll get myself in the house just fine.â
Duncan pats him on the back. âWeâll just wait to make sure.â
âNo, man. You donât have to wait. Really.â
Aernoud chuckles. âDuncan, letâs go.â
Duncan remains planted outside the car, determined to make sure Brand can get inside his house.
âDude,â Brand speaks slowly. âIâve already repeated. Iâm gonna be just fine. Now, go take Calli to her home.â
âFine.â Duncan opens the driverâs door and climbs behind the wheel.
